Vera Willoughby

Véra Willoughby (1870–1939) was a watercolour painter and poster designer. As a middle-aged mother, she was the love interest of young Peter Llewelyn Davies during his military service in World War I.
Willoughby was born in Hungary in 1870. She studied at Slade School of Fine Art in Bloomsbury, Central London.
She met Peter Davies in 1917, when he was 20 years old, and three years into his service in the British Army. Despite the age difference, and the fact that she already had a daughter (older than him), Davies courted her, and stayed with her when on leave. This scandalized J. M. Barrie and caused a rift between the two men, and Davies' former nurse and mother figure Mary Hodgson disapproved strongly as well. The relationship continued past the end of Davies' military service in 1919. In 1926, budding publisher Peter Davies produced an edition of the 1706 comedic play The Recruiting Officer by George Farquhar which featured illustrations by Willoughby.
Willoughby designed posters for the London public transit system from 1928 thru 1935.
