De-As Fi...Peter Pan

De-As Fi...Peter Pan is a 1991 film from Romania directed by Gheorghe Naghi. Although it's not a direct adaptation, it is heavily inspired by J.M. Barrie's original, as well as by the 1987 Soviet version. It starts and finishes with a peculiar wraparound sequence set in an alien landscape featuring several organic-looking sculptures of characters from Peter Pan. The lone human figure in this landscape, a nameless young boy, is promised (by a disembodied booming voice) that he can be Peter Pan for 24 hours if he takes the 'interplanetary magic crystal' from the cupped hand of one of the statues.
After taking the crystal, the boy materialises in an early-20th-Century household, alongside a musical libretto for Peter Pan; this libretto turns up in the hands of several different characters during the action which follows, rather clumsily re-emphasising the fact that the Peter Pan we're watching isn't the original Peter Pan, merely another boy reliving his adventures. The household is home to Wendy and some 'Lost Children', with whom Peter relives some of his J.M. Barrie adventures, flying around the bedroom, or battling Captain Hook in Never Land, and so on. The only difference is that Tinkerbell is nowhere to be seen, and neither is fairy dust; rather, Peter uses the 'interplanetary crystal' or blows on his panpipes to achieve such 'magic'. The journeys to Never Land take the form of out-of-body experiences during sleep, with the children still also seen asleep at home at the same time as being in Never Land.
The movie ends with the alien landscape wraparound, with the unnamed boy's 24 hours of being Peter Pan now over, as he returns the crystal to the statue's palm.
